UMassD/IIT Links Strengthened

wp_IIT_interns_004Ten senior undergraduate students from the Indian Institute of Technology, the country’s premier institution of higher education in engineering, are deepening their research experience at UMass Dartmouth this summer. Over a two-month internship, each “visiting research student” tackles a research problem defined jointly with an advisor from SMAST or an engineering discipline. On July 11, the interns will present their research results at a closing event.

This is year three of the IIT Intern Program, established by outgoing Provost Alex Fowler with the assistance of Prof. Avijit Gangopadhyay during his service as Associate Dean of SMAST. Prof. Gangopadhyay leaves in July for a Fulbright-sponsored sabbatical at IIT in the city of Bhubaneshwar, where he will teach ocean circulation and modeling, and work with his hosts to develop an “ocean observatory” on the Bay of Bengal, one of the most densely populated stretches of ocean shoreline in the world.
