UMassD Receives $1.1 Million Navy Grant

wp_gooddyeshotThe U.S. Office of Naval Research has awarded $1.1 million over three years to three UMass Dartmouth professors to study the process of ocean mixing. Drs. Louis Goodman and Miles Sundermeyer, both of SMAST, and Dr. Amit Tandon (Physics/SMAST) will use an unmanned submersible vehicle, dye-release experiments, and numerical experiments to advance our understanding of lateral mixing, one of the most basic—and least understood—processes affecting the distribution of nutrients, plankton, and pollutants in the coastal ocean. In conjunction with this work, the National Science Foundation has also granted $400 thousand over the same three-year period to Dr. Sundermeyer to collaborate with WHOI colleagues in complementary research using an airborne laser-based radar that can rapidly map subsurface dye patches to reveal mixing in the ocean. The U.S. Office of Naval Research has awarded $1.1 million over three years to three UMass Dartmouth professors to study the process of ocean mixing.
