Graduate Research Opportunities - The School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, invites applications from qualified students to our master¡¯s and Ph.D. programs to work on interdisciplinary problems related to ocean observation modeling and prediction in any of the following three areas:

SMAST's first Ph.D. candidate defends - Ayan Chaudhuri (at center in photo) reached a personal milestone last week when he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation, "Response of the Gulf Stream, Gulf Stream Warm-Core Rings and Related Shelf Water Entrainment to the North Atlantic Oscillation."

UMass to share in $2.1 million NOAA award - Two UMass Dartmouth scientists are part of a research team that has been awarded $2.1 million for regional ocean observation by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

UMass hosts Atlantic observation system planners - The School for Marine Science and Technology of UMass Dartmouth hosted a consortium of 20 universities and organizations last week to plan the initial stages of a system to monitor the changing conditions and health of coastal waters from Massachusetts to North Carolina.

Center of Excellence Founded - The John Adams Innovation Institute has awarded a $300,000 grant to two University of Massachusetts campuses to develop a Center of Excellence in Applied Ocean Observation Systems.

UMass Oceanographers Funded to Study Effects of North Atlantic Oscillation - UMass Dartmouth oceanographers Drs. Avijit Gangopadhyay and James Bisagni have been awarded $450,000 by the National Science Foundation to investigate the effects of climate change on marine ecosystems.

UMassD Professor to Help Develop Prediction System for Brazil - A University of Massachusetts Dartmouth oceanographer has been funded by the Brazilian government to co-develop a system to predict ocean circulation in the waters north of Rio de Janeiro, a promising region for oil development.
