Dr. Brown's research interests include: coastal ocean dynamics in the Gulf of Maine; the response of the Gulf of Maine to winter storm winds and waves; identifying the mechanisms and estimating the rates of exchange between the coastal ocean and the interior gulf to define coastal current variability; winter mixed layer evolution and formation of the nutrient-rich Maine Intermediate water in the Wilkinson and Jordan basins; estuarine circulation; and data assimilation ocean modeling in which ocean observations are integrated into coastal ocean models.

Professor Brown is currently faculty chair at SMAST. His previous academic appointment was in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of New Hampshire where he was also director of the Ocean Process Laboratory and chair of the UNH Marine Program Executive Committee. He earned his Ph. D. in Oceanography from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
