Narragansett Bay Habitats

How much habitat has been lost or altered?

  • Over 50% of regional saltmarshes have been lost since colonial times
  • As much as 70% of saltmarshes in Narragansett bay have been modified.
  • As much as 90% of the east coast eelgrass beds were lost to a fungal blight in the 1930’s, and now they have completely vanished from MHB
