Meetings, Workshops & Reports

The first MARIBS workshop convened on 15 March 2005 at UMass Dartmouth's Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Center (AMTC) to (1) establish sub-regional data and information priorities; (2) discuss governance options; and (3) select representatives to MACOORA (see workshop report). Some of the priority MARIBS issues emerging from the workshop included hypoxia, oil spills, red tide, storm surge, and sustainable fisheries. The question was how could we, as a region with few funded ocean observing systems, move forward with the construction of a Massachusetts and Rhode Island Coastal Ocean Observing System (MARICOOS) component of the regional MARCOOS. We adopted the strategy of convening a series of mini-workshops, each focused on the design of a MARICOOS component focused on providing users with information in one of the priority areas (see whitepaper).

Because there was potential Katrina-related funding for coastal inundation on the horizon, the second MARIBS workshop (a mini-workshop) that was convened at the ATMC on 14-15 September 2006 to consider the design of the inundation component of MARICOOS (see inundation mini-workshop report). Future mini-workshops during the next couple years will consider the design of other MACOORA/MARICOOS components.
