The High Resolution Trawl Project at the School for
Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) is a collaborative effort of
the commercial bottom trawl fishing fleet, researchers at SMAST, and
the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection,
Division of Marine Fisheries. The primary focus of the project has been
the development
of
methods of gathering fishery, oceanographic, and meteorological data
through commercial fishing operations.
- The Trawl Project is finishing its second
year. In year two we collected data from fifty
trips to Georges Bank and over 1800 hauls!
- In addition to continuing to collect and process
fisheries data, the Trawl Project will also begin to focus on
producing a technical report and a materials
and methods paper.
- Veteran at-sea technicians Ross Kessler and
Dave Martins are joined by newcomer Darin Jones.
All three will continue to work under the guidance of researchers
Kevin Stokesbury and Rodney Rountree.
- The Project has recently acquired a new
digital camera. We plan to use the camera to produce
visual aids for explaining the components of a fishing vessel
and the processes of commercial fishing. Our water-resistant
Olympus should be able to perform well in the salt spray on
the deck of a fishing boat.
