Lightship data consists of monthly mean water temperatures measured at the lightship locations listed below (2). The combined data spans the dates 1878-07 to 1956-08.

Ambrose Channel (1947-56), New York, off the entrance to New York Bay, east and south of Sandy Hook, 6.2 miles and 097 degrees from the Sandy Hook Lighthouse.
Barnegat (1947-56), off the New Jersey coast, 8 miles offshore east of Barnegat Inlet. 
Boston (1925-40). Reference mark for Boston harbor approaches; originally in 84 feet of water about 6 1/4 miles ESE of Boston Light, Massachusetts.

Brentons Reef (1878-1943), Rhode Island, guarded Brenton Reef and served to mark the approaches to Narrangansett Bay, being positioned off its east passage, originally 3.5 miles bearing 124 degrees from Beavertail Lighthouse, then later moved southerly. 
Cross Rip (1878-92), Massachusetts, originally positioned off the northeast end of Tuckernuck Shoal in the approaches to Nantucket Harbor, then moved westward off Cross Rip Shoal. 
Fire Island (1925-40), New York, about 40 miles eastward of the entrance to New York harbor, and about nine miles off Fire Island. 
Five Fathom Bank (1878-40), New Jersey, off the south end of Five Fathom Bank, 14.7 miles and 100 degrees from the Cape May Lighthouse
Great Round (1891-1903), Massachusetts, located 5.8 miles and 084 degrees from the Great Point Lighthouse. 
Matinicus Rock (1878-1907), 6 miles south of Matinicus Island, Maine.
Nantucket Shoals (1878-1941), originally referred to as "Nantucket New South Shoal" from 1854-1896; from 1896 through 1983 it was named "Nantucket Shoals." This station marked the southern extremity of the extensive shoalst south and east from Nantucket Island, Massachusetts.
Pollock Rip (1878-1941), Massachusetts, initially located at the junction of the natural Pollock Rip and Pollock Rip Slue channels, 8.3 miles and 159 degrees from the Chatham Light, and about 4 1/2 miles east of Monomoy Point. 
Portland (1925-1940), Marking approaches to Portland Harbor, about five miles southeasterly from Cape Elizabeth, Maine.  The station was located 5.0 miles and 121 degrees from the present Cape Elizabeth Light tower.
The station was originally named "Cape Elizabeth" from 1903-1912.
Sandyhook (1878-1892), New Jersey. (See Ambrose Channel)
Stratford Shoal (1878-1892), Connecticut, southerly from Bridgeport off Stratford Point. 
Vineyard Sound (1878-1907), Massachusetts.
