NEWS & EVENTS

ROV fleet launched
04.29.08 Instead of “chilling” for spring break, a group of SouthCoast fifth- to ninth-grade students spent last week building remotely operated submersible vehicles (ROVs) at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. The ROV workshop climaxed on Friday with a “sea test” of the finished vehicles in the SMAST acoustic tank. The course was run by Bob Rocha, Community Science Programs Manager for the Whaling Museum, with the assistance of Dana Brown, UMass Dartmouth senior, on loan from the Advanced Technology Manufacturing Center in Fall River.

Safety training resumes at SMAST
04.24.08 Fifty-two commercial fishermen underwent a day of hands-on training in basic safety and survival at sea at SMAST last Friday. Coast Guard certified instructors taught participants the basics of firefighting, flooding response, pump operation, use of flares and other emergency signaling devices, donning immersion suits, deploying life rafts, vessel stabilization, and a new addition to the training regime—man overboard emergency response. Among the guests observing the training were New Bedford Mayor Scott Lang and Kristin Decas, Executive Director of the New Bedford Harbor Development Commission, which sponsored the day of safety training.

SMAST researchers reach out
04.16.08 Massachusetts high school students were treated to presentations from SMAST's groundfish and scallop working groups during the Massachusetts Marine Educators’ 25th Annual High School Marine Science Symposium, hosted by UMass Dartmouth on March 19. Talia Bigelow, Nikki Jacobson, and Shannon O'Connor led hands-on workshops on fish tagging procedures, which included the opportunity to tag several fish with a variety of tags. Cate O'Keefe, Alyssa MacDonald, and Michelle Bachman talked with students about research at sea and scallop research in particular, and then gave students a chance to try on survival suits, tag sea scallops, and identify marine life forms in images of the sea floor.

Artworks grace SMAST lobby
04.07.08 Three works by New Bedford artist John Magnan went on display in the SMAST lobby this week. John studied art at the Maryland Institute College of Art and earned his MFA here at UMass Dartmouth. He is very active in the New Bedford community and is a member of New Bedford's AHA (Arts/History/Architecture) Steering Committee. His work was recently featured on CBS “Sunday Morning.” The exhibit is part of a collaboration between SMAST and the UMass Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts.

Stevens appointed to shellfisheries board
03.20.08 Department of Fisheries Oceanography Professor Bradley Stevens has been appointed to a two-year term on the Editorial Board of the National Shellfisheries Association. The Editorial Board ensures the quality of the papers that appear in the Journal of Shellfish Research. In addition to reviewing manuscripts, a board member may function as journal editor for appropriate papers, and is charged with recruiting quality scientific articles for the journal from his colleagues.
